Green Silicon Carbide for Grinding and Polishing Billiard Table Slate
Billiard tables adopt slate, a hard and brittle stone material. The flatness of the table surface directly affects the smooth rolling path of billiard balls and hitting stability. Green silicon carbide features high hardness, strong self-sharpening performance and sharp grains, delivering high cutting efficiency when grinding stone. It contains extremely low impurities and leaves no black spots or dark marks after grinding, ensuring the slate is clean and uniform throughout. Black silicon carbide has high iron content and tends to leave black scratches during grinding, so it is prohibited for high-end billiard slate.
Grinding of billiard slate follows four progressive steps: rough leveling, medium grinding to remove cutting marks, fine grinding to eliminate textures, and mirror finishing polishing. Abrasive grit becomes finer step by step, and all operations are conducted via wet grinding.
| Grinding Procedure | Commonly Used Mesh of Green Silicon Carbide | Processing Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Rough Leveling | 80#, 120#, 150# | Level height differences, natural pits and cutting tool marks on slate, and unify the horizontal level of the entire slate |
| Medium Grinding | 240#, 320#, 400# | Remove deep scratches generated in rough grinding, refine the surface and finalize basic flatness |
| Fine Grinding | 600#, 800#, 1000# | Fully erase textures from medium grinding and achieve a matte and smooth surface |
| Mirror Finishing Polishing | 1500#~3000# Micropowder | Create a matte mirror finish on slate with no tiny scratches visible to the naked eye |
Key Impacts of Green Silicon Carbide Grinding Effect on Billiard Performance
- Stable ball rolling without deviation: High-precision grinding guarantees uniform flatness across the whole slate. Billiard balls roll at a constant speed without local acceleration, jamming or trajectory deviation.
- Extended service life of table cloth: Free of raised burrs, the slate prevents the table cloth from being punctured by hard particles. Even force distribution reduces local depression of the cloth.
- Long-term structural stability: Uniform grinding releases internal stress of slate, greatly lowering the risk of slate warping amid seasonal temperature and humidity fluctuations.
- Consistent hitting feel: The delicate surface enables tight and uniform fitting of table cloth, ensuring consistent cushion rebound and hitting experience everywhere on the table.
Mandatory Construction Requirements
- Wet grinding is required throughout the whole process. Dry grinding easily causes slate burning and warping, accompanied by heavy abrasive dust.
- Grinding must proceed from coarse grit to fine grit in strict sequence. Skipping grit grades will lead to incomplete removal of coarse scratches.
- The same grades of green silicon carbide shall be used for step-by-step regrinding when renovating old billiard slate and repairing dents and impact pits.
Procurement Selection Standards & Supply Specifications
- Purity standard: Green silicon carbide purity ≥99%, Fe₂O₃ ≤0.15% to avoid black discoloration after grinding.
- Particle size requirement: Rigorous screening with narrow particle size range and no oversized grains to prevent deep pit scratches.
- Available regular grades: 80#, 120#, 150#, 240#, 320#, 400#, 600#, 800#, 1000#, 1500#, 2000#, 3000#.
- Packaging: 25kg laminated woven bags and 1-ton bulk bags, suitable for mass wet grinding production in billiard manufacturers.
