The most important semiconductor material in the 5G era: silicon carbide
Entering the 5G generation, most 5G products have the characteristics of high power, high voltage, and high temperature. Traditional silicon (Si) raw materials cannot meet the technological needs of the new generation because they cannot overcome the loss in high voltage and high frequency. (SiC) is starting to emerge.
The advantages of electronic components made of SiC over Si mainly come from three aspects: reducing energy loss in the process of power conversion, easier to achieve miniaturization, and more resistant to high temperature and high pressure.
According to the Yole Développement report, the SiC power semiconductor market will grow to $2 billion by 2024, with a compound annual growth rate of about 30% between 2018 and 2024. Among them, the automotive market is undoubtedly the most important driver, and its share of the SiC power semiconductor market is expected to reach 50% by 2024.
