Which grades of black silicon carbide are suitable for metal blasting?

The selection of black silicon carbide grades for metal blasting mainly depends on the material of the workpieces to be blasted. Black silicon carbide is divided into abrasive grains and micro-powders by particle size.

Grades of Black Silicon Carbide Abrasive Grains

FEPA Standard: F8, F10, F12, F14, F16, F20, F24, F30, F36, F40, F46, F54, F60, F70, F80, F90, F100, F120, F150, F180, F220

JIS Standard: JIS #8, #10, #12, #14, #16, #20, #24, #30, #36, #46, #60, #70, #80, #90, #100, #120, #150, #180, #220

P Standard: P12, P16, P20, P24, P30, P36, P40, P50, P60, P80, P100, P120, P180, P220

  1. Coarse-grade black silicon carbide abrasive grains for heavy rust removal, thick oxide scale stripping, old thick paint cleaning and large steel structures

    Common sizes: 16#, 24#, 30#, 36#

    Particle size: 0.5~1.2 mm

Applications: Heavy rust on carbon steel, casting sand removal, weld slag cleaning, thick coating stripping

Surface finish: High roughness Ra60~100 μm with ultra-strong adhesion, ideal for heavy anti-corrosion coating

Strict particle size requirements: No oversized agglomerates; oversize particles retained on sieve ≤5% to avoid deep groove scratches

  2. Medium-grade black silicon carbide abrasive grains for general standard blasting (the most widely used type on the market)

    Common sizes: 46#, 60#, 80#, 100#, 120#

    Particle size: 0.14~0.4 mm

Applications: Pre-treatment of stainless steel, aluminum alloy, copper alloy, molds, auto parts and hardware; removal of light rust, machining tool marks and minor burrs

Surface finish: Uniform matte surface with Ra20~50 μm, standard roughness for painting and electroplating

Particle size requirements: Narrow particle size distribution with few oversized and undersized particles to ensure consistent blasting texture in mass production

  3. Fine-grade black silicon carbide abrasive grains for precision matte finishing, light deburring, thin-walled parts and small aerospace components

    Common sizes: 150#, 180#, 220#, 240#

    Particle size: 45~106 μm

Applications: Ultra-thin stainless steel, precision aluminum alloy parts, titanium alloy and medical devices; only for matte surface finishing without damaging workpiece substrate

Surface finish: Delicate foggy surface with Ra3~15 μm, free of deep scratches

Particle size requirements: No oversized particles mixed in to prevent pitting on workpiece surfaces
